P1: Describe the different radio industry operations
National commercial radio
is a type of radio that is mainly made for a nationwide audience as it will mostly broadcast a specific genre of films or music depending on what is "trending", they are funded by their commercials that they make and the absolute radio talk shows that they have, whenever they are broadcasting something it is always a new topic and nothing gets repeated. From the research made the most popular broadcast from absolute radio is the Dave Berry breakfast show, rock n roll football, talk and music. Absolute radio is owned by a group called Bauer and this is a cross media group which means that companies who go across the radio and tv box set which all integrate so that they are able to promote their companies. The most popular magazine has a frequency of 105.2 FM and the name of this magazine is called "kerrang" this magazine is a British weekly which is devoted to rock, punk and heavy metal music which is currently published by wasted talent. Kerrang do not only own a magazine but they also have a tv channel for all their music and their very own festival. their target audience is mostly adult males as it has football adverts for games and other manly content. Here is a clip of the "Dave Berry breakfast show" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0GtsLONvNw
Here this programme is a talk show and a music station where the presenter gets a celebrity to come in the show and talk about the music they make. this target audience is mostly aimed towards 16+ as the celebrities are in a range of teen pop and some 18 films. their gender is based on who is going to be interviewed , however their music is made for everyone and anyone who finds their songs appealing, for example not many males listen to Ariana Grande so her songs are mostly towards the females. https://www.facebook.com/bbcradio1/videos/ariana-grandes-advice-line-%EF%B8%8F/10156430389916763/ (Ariana grande on absolute radio)
Public Radio
Public radio is a radio station where their content is broadcasted into the public which allows everyone to listen to the news and are able to listen to music too, public radio is funded by the government and they are available online. Some examples of public radio would be BBC radio which consists of BBC iPlayer and a public radio which broadcasts between news and music, they include some of their programmes on BBC radio 1 and Scott Mills talk and some music genre. These are specifically based on the older generation for their entertainment and made for adults too so they can know about the weather or know what is happening in the news. Adding to this is that they are funded by the government so this means that they do not need adverts to get their money as that is what the government is giving them.
Scott Mills on the BBC 1 radio is a male presenter who is 20 years old and his target audience is for men who are over 20 because his content that he shares is mostly for the male gender as he talks about sports etc, his age of target audience is for 20 year olds because the younger generation will not find his jokes funny or they may not be able to understand his jokes or the way he talk about other topics as he does talk about what he was like when he was a child. this programme was compared to the bbc radio shows like the news as it would be a lot more informal as he starts talking about his life and the male lifestyle, whereas the news will only produce content that is current/recent. https://www.facebook.com/bbcradio1/videos/punny-business-with-scott-mills/2489223174647595/
Regional Radio
The most popular show on regional radio is the "big john at breakfast" this show is presented by 3 presenters 2 males and 1 female and they have a main speaker, it is mainly speech based and they have music in the background. what they talk about on big john at breakfast mainly is to do with what is currently happening and their causes to people in the region. As there are adult presenters the target audience is mainly aimed at an adult audience who are 20+ and is aimed for both male and female gender. they are based on a particular sector of abc 1 families as their events are mainly based on sponsoring people for entering different competition. Adverts will be based on the ABC demographic such as their events regional and adverts from companies that are wanting more profit, as both genders have adverts they would play an advert for males like an aftershave advert and then a makeup advert for the females. regional radio is broadcasted in specific regions as they have a remit to only broadcast specific content like talking about the news and relevant information. this radio station includes advertisement to fund the radio station but only by talking about lifestyle.
Community Radio
Community radio broadcasts to the local area which is aimed at local areas like Sheffield and they have programmes like film shows and talk shows they also have a very popular one which is the local talent show music show. Adverts aren't used as this is not a profit ran radio show, you are able to access this radio on DAB radio and on online streaming. this is a very niche station even though absolute radio also includes niche programmes. Community radio has all their programmes paired up for example rock n roll and football are both niche genres so they are put together. the type of adverts that the radio station is most likely to be going on would be the business wanting adverts which is aimed at the audience.
There are programmes where they aim to promote new or upcoming artists and we have a look at their music that could be added to the music genres, their target audience is for 16+ , for both genders male and female. this show is only there to boost the confidence of new upcoming artists/ musicians who want the world to hear what they have created and to see If people like their work. they will get a confidence boost while they perform their content and could most likely be found by a producer who is willing to help them become big.
Internet Radio
Internet Radio is mainly based on basic content like basic radio stations, this means that there are only stations online, live radio and gaydar radio are both online based stations which podcast on Mixcloud streaming service, which used to be a British digital radio station for gay men, lesbians and gay friendly people, on DAB multiplexes in London and Brighton and also online. It was broadcast 24 hours a day, with live programming from 5am to midnight during the week, 7am to midnight at weekends.
Non - Profit Radio
Non profit radio stations are stations that have no advertisement mostly at universities and colleges, a station in particular would be leeds university as they have a student radio station, they have several content that is based by the students who are applying each term. there are talk shows and music programmes and evening based shows which are just for music and late night talks. you can access this type of radio on the internet and in the uni.
