Production Journey

when me and Nik recorded our radio drama dialogue we had to take a bit of time to record all our dialogue because me and Nik haven't really used our voice to speak in a radio drama so this was our first time and we would end up complaining about each other or end up laughing and making mistakes so that's why it took us a very long time. however we managed it in the end with a bit more complaining about each other to each other which was actually really funny to us. once we got all our recordings finally finished we had to separate our mistakes that we called our bloopers and we still kept them but in a different area. for the narration parts that me and Nik had to take turns doing I had to change the tone of my voice and I had to be more straight forward and upfront. what we also did was when we were speaking you would hear the noise of us pressing the space bar or clicking of the mouse when we started and stopped recording so for that we had to also sit and cut the parts out so that it ran smoothly when we put all he recordings together.

After recording our draft we had to get audience feedback and they listened to our radio and would give us some feedback comments on what we could improve on and what they liked about it. They told us we needed to make our voices a bit clearer and have our voices stay at the same pitch as sometimes we would stop recording and when we started we would sound completely different , we also had to retake a couple of clips as there was too much background noise.

After all of that we tried to improvise and make up more of our story as it was too short and we needed it to be longer, we added a part where she has had enough and she wanted to end her life so we added that scene and that made our video go past just about 5 minutes. we created the sound effects with what we had around us as well as using the foley sounds that we have  created in the past. with the souds we created we also had to use back ground music to introduce our radio show and an ending to finish it off.

then we added Khairun to be one of the mean girls that were bullying the girl so she played the character of the bully and was being really mean and saying horrible things to her which made my  character want to end her life. After we put all the recordings together and edited them, we then went to the final cut pro and imported the recordings there. We added a picture from google and put the title " THE GOSSIP HUB"

Size VS Quality

 Lossy

Lossy file compression results in lost data and quality from the original version. Lossy compression is typically associated with image files, such as JPEGs, but can also be used for audio files, like MP3s or AAC files.

Lossless

Lossless file refers to a type of compressed digital audio file that uses advantaged data compression algorithms so that the audio track doesn't "lose" any detail in the compression process.

Bit rate

bitrate defines the amount of data that is stored in the sound file you are listening to it also indicates the amount of data that is processed or delivered over a certain time span

File size

File size measures the size of a computer file and is typically measured in bytes with a prefix. The smallest unit in computers is bit and comes from binary digit

feedback

here on our feedback we have a mix of different opinions on our radio, Kayla said that the radio show was interesting as it would open minds for people who have no idea about this topic and that they can learn about what happens in society and that it really does affect people. Ben also agreed with Kayla and said that it felt very depressing because it happened to someone in real life that he knew.

we then went ahead and asked them about the strength and weaknesses and ben said that we gave it a platform so that it can be spoken about and realise that it can be spoken about. Kayla said that didn't raise much of an awareness so what we could have done is had a message in the beginning or the end of nicks voice over but unfortunately we do not have enough time and he has gone on holiday so instead I will try my best to find another person similarly to fill in the ending voiceover or just find someone who can help with this. she also said that the storyline was understood well and that we have tried o raise an awareness but we just need to do a little bit more so we can improve this by making the message more clear.

we asked them about what audience and what age group they think this would fit into and ben said its for everyone who goes through these issues like families and children as well as teenagers and Kayla said they're for young adults, adolescents and teenagers of this generation as most of us are on social media and can easily get influenced an effects the generation.

the improvements that they gave us was that we should work on the aim of our radio nd speak about it but unfortunately this is a two people job speak about it so unfortunately I will have to try and find a replacement.

overall Ben and Kayla both said it was a good radio and hat they would listen to it again as it had some drama in it which was the girl who took her own life because of bullying so the message for that was we was trying to raise awareness about how this stuff actually effects people around all sorts of types homes and that we should not always be rude to other people especially the ones we don't know as we have no idea hat is going on in their lives.

what we also need to do is add copyright music and that we need to add some effects in the back so that it sounds more like a radio drama as we have a good introduction to open our show.

RELEASE FORMS

legal and ethics grid

Constraints

Describe details

Explain the impact

Voice artist release forms

if we are going to be using the voice of our actors we will need to get their permission where they have said that they allow us to use them and they will do this by signing a release form ,this allows them to have the right to let their voices be recorded, published and edited. This will only be used for our purposes.

If we do not get the release forms signed by the voice actors and we just use them then we could face a lawsuit as we do not have any physical evidence that the actors have agreed to participate.

PPL

PPL stands for “ public performance licensing” and what this is in order to make sure that we can play music in our radio we will need legal permission from the copyright holders so that we can use it in our radio. This also means that we cant let people listen to our radio unless we have this copyright form.

As we have full control over the sounds we include in our radio we will need to make sure that they get registered by the public performing license and there will be a cost that we will nee to pay as it is our radio drama which will go public for people to hear. We will need this especially if we have copy right music.

PRS

“performing rights society” this will allow us to play any type of music in our radio.

Without this we are not allowed to make our radio drama public unless the fee gets paid.

Royalties

If we want to use music that comes from another artist we will need to give them some sort of royalty, receiving royalties means that the artist will get a little amount of money for letting us use their music and this also includes us being allowed to play their songs publicly.

Playing sounds that belong to another artist without paying is not good because they need a bit of credit especially as they have created this music , however this may be  an issue as we only have a small budget.

Copyright

Having copyright music or sounds will keep the music away from being copied and allowing others to use it. Without the artists permission we could get fined and not allowed to continue with our radio.

When we have background music it may be hard for our radio drama as we need to get permission that we are allowed to use their products or else we need to find copyright free music.

Offensive content

We will not be putting any offensive content on our radio as people can get offended and we may lose our listeners and may end up getting a lot of hate.

We will need to clear out any offensive content that could be on our radio as we all do not want to receive hurtful or threatening messages.

Slander

Keeping up offensive content on our radio can create a lot of offense to the listeners and we can also lose listeners and get a lot of hate.

Clearing any bad language in our radio and violent messages as we do not want to experience any threatening messages.

Defamation

This is also similar to slander as making fake statements that is not true could ruin our productions reputation and we could all have a bad image upon us.

This can cause a slander if we start to tell lies in our radio drama or about any of the celebrities that are mentioned in our radio as people will believe it and we could lose all listeners.

Representation

Representation is how social media shows us to the world and how it will either impact the people around us or the society.

In our radio we talk about celebrities and their daily life drama that has been on social media. The radio drama represents how to inform the listeners and allows them to keep up with celeb drama.

This type of content is mainly aimed at young teenagers and some parents as the parents can also learn something about what has been going on and how their child could be affected and by this it will make them a much wary of. U16, Sound elements production report on experimenting and producing sound

 Foley Sounds

Foley sounds are the production and recording of sound effect these include sounds such as breaking glass, stepping on leaves, creaking glass. These sounds are used  to enhance realism. For wild tracks the background will blend in to the scene like crowded street, school or busy restaurant. They are known as off-screen sounds because it is sound recorded after the footage.

Theme Music For The Sequence

The Theme music that is played in the beginning is a sound  and the end of a show or movie. Most of the time they would have music for people to remember and quickly catch it so they can recognise it if its played again.

https://youtu.be/r9L4AseD-aA

Film Score

A Film score is  music that is specifically written for a certain  type of show or movie and timed at the begin and end of the scene. Film score would add more emotion and drama to the scene.

https://youtu.be/yogaAzfzpkk

Character's signature tune

A Character's signature tune is where there is a character in film and there is a type of music that plays indicating that the character is here. Like the prowler in spider verse there's always this loud eerie music that would play anytime he would appear.

https://youtu.be/YOIGw1vl3mk

Incidental music

incidental music is when there is music used in a film or play as a background and what that would do is create or enhance an atmosphere in that particular scene.

Voice over

voice over is a production technique where a voice is recorded off screen. Voice overs are usually used to tell stories or using it for a cartoon character that's talking. Voice overs create more meaning and would make the film or show less boring.

https://youtu.be/FfdaUs5cI2M

Scripted Speech

Scripted speech is prepared and written down in advance. They are used to give the actors a clear idea on what they need to say and help them in the process.

U14, P1: To compare presentation of the programme

The cast in death by conspiracy includes only the producer and the editor , the producer is called "Ant Adeane" and the editors name is Mike wendling. in the radio show "Uncanny" the cast is written and presented by Danny Robins. The editor and sound designer is Charlie Brandon King. Their music that they have playing in the background is created by Evelyn Sykes, the theme tunes were by lanterns on the lake and this whole drama was produced by Danny robins and Simon Barnard.

The mode of address for uncanny in my opinions more informal as they were talking to the audience as if they knew the audience as they speak very casually to the other person who is asking him questions and theres more discussing that happens. However in death by conspiracy it is more of a documentary type of show while uncanny is more of a podcast.

For the tone I think that uncanny is more scarier and creates a suspenseful tone as he is telling the audience ghost stories as he explains what happens to him, the sound effects make the background seem very tense. Death by conspiracy does not give off the same spooky vibes and atmosphere as uncanny does even though they're topic is related to Gary Mathews and his life when he was alive , it is still intriguing and The only suspenseful atmosphere was the ringing sound in the beginning. uncanny the dialect is not formal but not informal its sort of in the middle as death by conspiracy is much more formal from the way they speak.

With uncanny it could possibly lead to people questioning how the drama was set up and how they made the audience question the radio show especially when theres something happening in the scene and the music gets louder each time and this leads the audience to question what is happening or what will end up happening. With death by conspiracy yet say that Gary Mathews was a nice and smart guy so they don't really understand why he had all those conspiracies as well as the ones that weren't even true and this can lead to the audience to question on why Gary was interested in these conspiracies when he had absolutely no reason to be at all. the stereotypes for uncanny are ghosts and spirits and how they would be like an evil atmosphere around and actually not being able to see it but they can feel that negative energy around them. Death by conspiracy are the conspiracies and how it is just people that are overthinking or trying to find something else that here could be.

U14, P1 : Differences between types of programmes

Talk Music

Capital FM has small talk introduction where they introduce the artist and what song will be played , they also add a little bit of humour making sure the audience doesn't get bored and think that theyre talking for too long. The songs/music are played to keep the audience entertained while they are working or driving to go to work. This is the type of programme that is very extraordinary as the audience are able to listen to music without having to create a playlist as the radio will play different types of songs, usually mainstream/popular songs to be played.

Sport

BBC sport live 5 track and field always have a sports spoken talk for people who are doing the sport that they talk about and would want to have a podcast interview as it will be their way of talking to each other. they also speak about how Louise Hazel would be defending her title and speaks about why she chose sports and why she did what she did. The audience will always have someone who is interested in female sports who would want to know about it more and find out about her personal stories. this programme is very interesting as it talks about all the different types of sports and because its a majority of women who are playing these sports.

Current Events

On BBC news they speak about the current events that are happening around the world making sure that everyone is aware of what is going on, for example on BBC news they have put up information about Russia invading Ukraine and are firing bombs which is leading to the cause of peoples homes being destroyed. This is a unique programme as it allows everyone around the world to keep up with what is going on and any important information making sure that everyone is aware and it also lets the audience know any small details that could be very important.

Lifestyle

Money box is an app which helps people to see how much they have spent on whatever they choose to do with their money. This basically shows them a transaction of everything that they spend. Money box also allows the users to see the amount of money that they have in their account as well as seeing the amount they have in their savings account if one has been created. This app is very helpful as it shows the user how much money they have taken out and how much they have put in .This is usually for those who are working or have a lot of money and are figuring a way to manage it all.

Dramatizations

BBC radio 4 has a lot of dramas and one I'm familiar with is called uncanny and death by conspiracy and they are about a man called Gary Mathews and he's into conspiracy theories till he died from getting covid. in this drama they speak about Garys life before he had passed away and the things that he did. This is a unique type of drama as it intrigues the audience and gets them interested as this is something quite new to them

Unit 14, M1 Analyse the structure and content of a programme broadcast by a chosen radio station

 Programme Analysis

The name of this programme is called "The Uncanny", Uncanny was first released on 12th October in 2021 and comes on every 6 days on a Saturday. Each episode is 28 minutes long however the into is only about 3 minutes long , the target audience will be for those who want a bit of entertainment or like jump scares. This programme is accessible on BBC Radio 4 on your TV or when you are inside your car and if you have access to a radio.

Uncanny is a factual and has realistic ghost stories for people to listen to, they speak about how these real life ghosts have been causing some issues towards people in the past and what kind of affects it has created towards these people. This podcast is to entertain people as ghost stories do often interest everyone and it is amusing to them, these podcasts will never bore anyone as paranormal activities are always happening. This podcast can inform and educate people as it can give everyone information about ghosts and what you need to know and look out for if they also have any paranormal activity going on they will not be as shocked and scared as they would be as they will have a little bit of knowledge. in 12:23 when he spoke about the door and how it would make very aggressive sounds as no one was there. This is educating as they are bringing real life scenarios into the podcast, in 12:28 a women named Caroline Watt who is a professional psychologist at the university of Edinburgh , Peter Laws tells us that he thinks it could be an illusion that's playing with their  minds like a dream and their physical body is confused , this will educate us as they are giving their opinions and what they think is right as well as what they believe because they have studied this for ages.

The content this podcast is trying to give off is a scary/horror ghost stories as the podcast is based on a man who doesn't believe in ghost at all and his name is Ken and he cant take in the fact that he has seen a ghost when he was a student in Belfast as in this first clip he was speaking about how some events have happened inside his bedroom and he has seen this situation as "pure evil" and he also tells us that these activities have always happened in room 611. with this you are able to see that as soon as the main speaker has started speaking in the podcast and says "just supernatural or if it can be explained". At 0:51 the music plays in the background and gives us a sense of an eerie atmosphere  as it has a bass playing in the background and due to this they are slowly drawing in the audience as its meant to be spooky.

At 6:03 ken was talking about him feeling a dark presence around him and he quiet didn't understand the reason on why his blankets started to move which frightened him even more and didn't know what to do. while you continue to watch the clip you can hear the music gradually getting louder and louder and this has created an exaggerated/dramatic effect to the audience which will make them think something extravagant has happened or someone is in danger. All of a sudden at 07:11 the music has a sudden stop indicating that nothing has happened and this creates a confusing atmosphere makig the audience question what has happened as they could have been expecting something. the same thing happens again in the clip. there was someone inside an elevator going to the floor ken was in and he found that very unusual and it made him think that someone was after him or going to visit him, however at the same time he felt as if something bad was coming and didnt like the sense of it. At 11:00 the music/sound came back however it is much louder than before and we heard marching footsteps, loud stomps and the sounds of doors being  punched and kicked making the audience feel sick to their stomach as theres so much happening in such a little amount of time.

with the mode of address in my opinion I feel like this show was informal only because Danny and Ken are using their personal pronouns which has engaged the audience to make them feel as if theyre directly talking to them. this makes the audience feel like they are a part of this podcast. ken uses the word "I" a lot throughout this podcast which is his own personal pronoun as it is him talking about the experience that he has been through and makes sure the audience feels comfortable with  him as he tries to not be so overly informal and not too overly formal.

Unit 14, P2 : Describe the focus of a chosen radio station

 Radio 4

Demographics

Radio 4 is notable for its new bulletins and programmes such as "today" and " The world at one" , radio 4 has been broadcasting the "shipping forecast" which reached 150 years old in august 2017. Radio 4 is the most popular British domestic radio station and its recorded that their highest audience was of 11 million listeners. It has been on air since 30th September 1967 which is a total of  54 years. They are funded through everyone's TV license  and are owned by the BBC.

The most listened to radio 4 are people who are age of 56 or over and skews towards an older audience , however their target audience is originally aimed at adults who are between the ages of 35 - 54. This could be because the most watched on radio 4 are the breakfast programmes and one of the popular show is called " The today programme" as it has more than seven million weekly listeners and the third is the radio 1 breakfast show with Greg James.  There is not a specific religion that listens to radio 4 as there is a mix of all the religions who sit at home or wherever and listen to the radio. There are a number of ethnic groups who listen to the radio and the biggest ethnicity group are the Hispanics as 97% of them listen to the radio than the Africans and Americans where only 92% of them listen to it ass they only spend around 20 minutes a week than Hispanics.

 Lifestyle

There are many people in the audience who listen to radio 4 that are quite busy people who have to work around 6-8 hours for their shift and they wont always have time to listen to what is going on around the world or to watch the news to find out , so what they will usually tend to do is turn the radio on and listen to for example "The today programme" and this show is a long running BBC early morning news and current affairs radio programme which is also on radio 4. It is broadcast on Monday to Friday from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and Saturday from 7:00 am to 9:00 am.

Spending power

The BBC is funded by everyone's TV licence. The audience will have a high spending power because radio 4 has been educating alot of university students who have already got their degrees.

Listening Figures

Radio 4's audience have remained at a massive 10.8 million and this adds up to a total of 116,503 hours everyone has spent altogether listening to radio 4, we can also see that an average of 55,675 people listen to radio 4.

BBC Radio 4 Schedules

At 6:00 in the morning there is a programme called "News Summary" which is broadcast and as people will usually have work early in the morning they will need to sort their morning routine out and get ready for work and by having this play on the radio will make it easy for them to catch up with what is going on around the world and their area. this is towards a larger audience because the age range is much older and a lot of people listening to this programme will be working , however there are programmes in the evening such as "pick of the week" which is on around 6:16 and this could be listened for people who are potentially making their way back home from work and are wanting to catchup.

P1: Explore different types of radio stations

P1: Describe the different radio industry operations

Image result for absloute radio National commercial radio

is a type of radio that is mainly made for a nationwide audience as it will mostly broadcast a specific genre of films or music depending on what is "trending", they are funded by their commercials that they make and the absolute radio talk shows that they have, whenever they are broadcasting something it is always a new topic and nothing gets repeated. From the research made the most popular broadcast from absolute radio is the Dave Berry breakfast show, rock n roll football, talk and music. Absolute radio is owned by a group called Bauer and this is a cross media group which means that companies who go across the radio and tv box set which all integrate so that they are able to promote their companies. The most popular magazine has a frequency of 105.2 FM and the name of this magazine is called "kerrang" this magazine is a British weekly which is devoted to rock, punk and heavy metal music which is currently published by wasted talent. Kerrang do not only own a magazine but they also have a tv channel for all their music and their very own festival. their target audience is mostly adult males as it has football adverts for games and other manly content. Here is a clip of the "Dave Berry breakfast show"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0GtsLONvNw

Here this programme is a talk show and a music station where the presenter gets a celebrity to come in the show and talk about the music they make. this target audience is mostly aimed towards 16+ as the celebrities are in a range of teen pop and some 18 films. their gender is based on who is going to be interviewed , however their music is made for everyone and anyone who finds their songs appealing, for example not many males listen to Ariana Grande so her songs are mostly towards the females. https://www.facebook.com/bbcradio1/videos/ariana-grandes-advice-line-%EF%B8%8F/10156430389916763/ (Ariana grande on absolute radio)

Public Radio

Image result for bbc radio 1Public radio is a radio station where their content is broadcasted into the public which allows everyone to listen to the news and are able to listen to music too, public radio is funded by the government and they are available online. Some examples of public radio would be BBC radio which consists of BBC iPlayer and a public radio which broadcasts between news and music, they include some of their programmes on BBC radio 1 and Scott Mills talk and some music genre. These are specifically based on the older generation for their entertainment and made for adults too so they can know about the weather or know what is happening in the news. Adding to this is that they are funded by the government so this means that they do not need adverts to get their money as that is what the government is giving them.

Scott Mills on the BBC 1 radio is a male presenter who is 20 years old and his target audience is for men who are over 20 because his content that he shares is mostly for the male gender as he talks about sports etc, his age of target audience is for 20 year olds because the younger generation will not find his jokes funny or they may not be able to understand his jokes or the way he talk about other topics as he does talk about what he was like when he was a child. this programme was compared to the bbc radio shows like the news as it would be a lot more informal as he starts talking about his life and the male lifestyle, whereas the news will only produce content that is current/recent.  https://www.facebook.com/bbcradio1/videos/punny-business-with-scott-mills/2489223174647595/

Regional Radio

The most popular show on regional radio is the "big john at breakfast" this show is presented by 3 presenters 2 males and 1 female and they have a main speaker, it is mainly speech based and they have music in the background. what they talk about on big john at breakfast mainly is to do with what is currently happening and their causes to people in the region. As there are adult presenters the target audience is mainly aimed at an adult audience who are 20+ and is aimed for both male and female gender. they are based on a particular sector of abc 1 families as their events are mainly based on sponsoring people for entering different competition. Adverts will be based on the ABC demographic such as their events regional and adverts from companies that are wanting more profit, as both genders have adverts they would play an advert for males like an aftershave advert and then a makeup advert for the females. regional radio is broadcasted in specific regions as they have a remit to only broadcast specific content like talking about the news and relevant  information. this radio station includes advertisement to fund the radio station but only by talking about lifestyle.

Community Radio

Community radio broadcasts to the local area which is aimed at local areas like Sheffield and they have programmes like film shows and talk shows they also have a very popular one which is the local talent show music show. Adverts aren't used as this is not a profit ran radio show, you are able to access this radio on DAB radio and on online streaming. this is a very niche station even though absolute radio also includes niche programmes. Community radio has all their programmes paired up for example rock n roll and football are both niche genres so they are put together. the type of adverts that the radio station is most likely to be going on would be the business wanting adverts which is aimed at the audience.

There are programmes where they aim to promote new or upcoming artists and we have a look at their music that could be added to the music genres, their target audience is for 16+ , for both genders male and female. this show is only there to boost the confidence of new upcoming artists/ musicians who want the world to hear what they have created and to see If people like their work. they will get a confidence boost while they perform their content and could most likely be found by a producer who is willing to help them become big.

Internet Radio

Internet Radio is mainly based on basic content like basic radio stations, this means that there are only stations online, live radio and gaydar radio are both online based stations which  podcast on Mixcloud streaming service, which used to be a British digital radio station for gay men, lesbians and gay friendly people, on DAB multiplexes in London and Brighton and also online. It was broadcast 24 hours a day, with live programming from 5am to midnight during the week, 7am to midnight at weekends.

Non - Profit Radio

Non profit radio stations are stations that have no advertisement mostly at universities and colleges, a station in particular would be leeds university as they have a student radio station, they have several content that is based by the students who are applying each term. there are talk shows and music programmes and evening based shows which are just for music and late night talks. you can access this type of radio on the internet and in the uni.
